Cinemate is a small movie-tracking platform. This policy explains the data we collect, how we use it, and the controls you have. It's plain-English on purpose — no surprises.

What we collect

To make Cinemate work, we store:

  • Account data from your sign-in method — Google, Apple, or an email sign-in link — meaning your email and display name.
  • Movies you log, your reactions, reviews, and watchlists.
  • Collections you create and follow relationships you opt into.
  • Watch history you import from other services (e.g. Letterboxd), which becomes part of your reel.
  • A push notification token, if you turn on notifications in the app.

How we use it

Your data powers your reel, your collections, and the activity feed your friends see. We don't sell it. We don't share it with advertisers. We use it to run the product — nothing else.

When you delete your account

We delete your profile, reel, watchlist, collections, follows, imports, notifications, and anything else keyed to your account. There's one exception: if friends have logged movies as "watched with" you, your first name stays in their reels as a guest companion — those entries are their personal records, not yours. The friend who owns the entry can rename or delete that guest from their guest list.

We also keep moderation reports — including a short excerpt of the reported content — after the account or content they concern is deleted, so we can act on past abuse.

Third-party services

Cinemate depends on a small number of vendors: Google and Apple for sign-in, Convex for our database and backend, Vercel for hosting, Resend for the emails we send you (sign-in links, account confirmations), Expo for push notification delivery, and PostHog (hosted in the EU) for product analytics and error tracking. Movie metadata comes from TMDB. Apart from Convex — the database everything lives in — none of these vendors receive the contents of your reel, reviews, or notes.

Cookies & analytics

On the web we use the cookies needed to keep you signed in, and — only if you accept the cookie banner — PostHog to understand how Cinemate is used: pageviews, clicks, the events you trigger (e.g. logging a movie, creating a collection), and any errors the app hits.

In the mobile app the same usage analytics, plus crash reports, are collected by default; you can turn this off at any time under Settings → Privacy → "Share analytics".

Either way: we do not run advertising trackers, and we do not record session replays.

On the web, you can change your mind at any time:

Your rights

You can, at any time:

  • Export everything you've logged as a single file — from your profile's edit page on the web.
  • Delete your account and all associated data — from your profile's edit page on the web, or Settings → Account & exit in the app.
  • Make your profile, reel, or collections private — with the House lights visibility controls.

If you get stuck, or want anything else done with your data, email simon@cinemate.film.

Changes to this policy

If we change anything material, we'll update the "Last updated" date above and email registered users. The current version always lives at this URL.
